Photography

Types of Photography

Documentary photography usually refers to a popular form of photography used to chronicle significant and historical events. It is typically covered in professional photojournalism, or real life reportage, but it may also be an amateur, artistic, or academic pursuit. The photographer attempts to produce truthful, objective, and usually candid photography of a particular subject, most often pictures of people.

Fine art photography is photography created in accordance with the vision of the artist as photographer. Fine art photography stands in contrast to photojournalism, which provides a visual account for news events, and commercial photography, the primary focus of which is to advertise products or services.
The science of photography refers to the use of science, such as chemistry and physics, in all aspects of photography. This applies to the camera, its lenses, physical operation of the camera, electronic camera internals, and the process of developing film in order to take and develop pictures properly.

Paparazzi is an Italian term used to refer to photographers who hunt and exploit athletes, celebrities, politicians, and other prominent people. Paparazzi tend to be independent contractors, unaffiliated with any mainstream media organization. They are not journalists and usually do not hold any degree in photography or fine art. Paparazzi photographers are often described as an unacceptable annoyance by celebrities. Actually some paparazzi do hold MFA's in photography, diplomas in commercial photography and cinematography degrees. Many celebrities complain about the extent to which paparazzi invade their personal space, and some have even filed a restraining order against them.

Fashion photography is a genre of photography devoted to displaying clothing and other fashion items. Fashion photography is most often conducted for advertisements or fashion magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, or Elle. Over time, fashion photography has developed its own aesthetic in which the clothes and fashions are enhanced by the presence of exotic locations or accessories.

The influence photography has on society.

The effect of photography in modern times has raised a number of concerns. The impact of modern photography can be seen on society. The camera is presented as a supporter of voyeuristic reserves in Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window in 1954, where although the camera is an observation station, it is the act of photographing which is  more than passive observing. In 1960, Michal Powell's Peeping Tom shows the camera as both sadistic and sexually aggressive technology. Capturing the images of the pain and suffering, apparent on the faces of the female victims, the influence of photography is clearly to be seen.

The impact of photography on society, as one of the new media forms changes the structure of society. Further discomfort has been caused due to cameras and photography in regards to being insensitive. Photos of war and pornography always cause a stir. It is also feared that disturbing or explicit images are easily accessible to children and society at large today. It is a concern today that people can be turned into objects that can be symbolically possessed by anyone today.

Another impact of photography can be seen in is tourism, where photography has a very important role to play. Local inhabitants are often positioned and described by the camera lens for crating that “tourist gaze". However, it has also been disputed that local photographers can position the tourist photographer as a superficial consumer of images. Nevertheless, we cannot simply turn our faces away from the impact of photography on society and our lives.
